Using the Right Squash Ball

Dear [[firstname]]

Following a couple of enquiries about which ball to use I would like to share the following.

There are no set rules regarding which dot ball you should be using for your matches in box leagues or in tournaments.

However the guidelines provided by England Squash, the PSA and major Squash ball manufacturers suggest players of varying levels should be using different speed/bounce balls to make the game more enjoyable for all playing. England Squash in particular is promoting the use of the ‘right’ ball amongst its coaches.

Blue Dot balls are for the very beginners and juniors, with a higher bounce allowing more time and less need for power to warm the ball up. Only really for use in the lower box leagues if the courts are cold.

Red Dot are for those starting to play in the leagues and are used in some of our tournaments. In many of my 1:1 sessions we use a red dot and even in some group adult sessions. I would advise those in leagues 9-11 to use a red.

Single Yellow Dot (Competition): Low bounce, designed for experienced/club players, or advanced players on colder courts. This is the ball most of our club should be using unless the courts are really warm. Ideally for leagues 3/4-8.

Double Yellow Dot (Pro): Very low bounce. The standard for professional and advanced players. Requires significant power and consistent warming up to maintain bounce. For leagues 1-3 and team matches.

I’d like to stress that these are guidelines and not rules and for players to come to an agreement on which to use do that both can enjoy the game as at the end of the day it’s meant to be fun!!

The club does stock all 4 of the balls and the blue and red dots that are available are the same size as the single/double yellow (some brands make them slightly bigger!).

Hope that makes sense and if you ever want to give them a try there is a box of coaching balls behind court 2 with some red and blue dots in if you can dig them out!!

Kind regards

Tom
