Choosing the Right Squash Ball

Dear [[firstname]]

As the temperature starts to drop as we steam roll towards winter, here’s my annual reminder to consider if you’re using the right ball. I have had a few people ask recently which ball they should use.

The guidelines that Karakal suggest on their box of balls, ‘Comp’ being single yellow and ‘Elite’ being double yellow are that single yellow for Competitive Club players, Red for improvers and Blue for juniors and newer players.

In the training sessions we do at the club as groups or 1:1 we rarely use a double yellow Elite ball, normally a single yellow or even a red, blue dots for the beginners and younger juniors.

The wilson staff Red and Blue dot balls also are very good as they are the same size as the yellow dot balls.

The white balls the pros use in competition are closer to a single yellow rather than a double yellow just as a reference point for you.

Choosing the right ball may improve and make your games more enjoyable as it can be frustrating playing with a ball that won’t bounce.

I believe all are on sale at the bar so why not give a different ball a try for a few games!

I won’t be imposing any ‘rules’ in regards to which hall to use in certain leagues however from the guidelines I would recommend that a double yellow would only really be used in leagues 1/2, then possible red or even blue in leagues 9-12.

Good luck and enjoy as always

Tom
